Evaluation of MOLST
Previous studies of POLST paradigm programs have shown promising results. Information about these studies is available at www.polst.org.
The Massachusetts MOLST demonstration includes a process evaluation to highlight program elements that work well as well as those that may need enhancements. Lessons learned will be used for continuous quality improvement of the MOLST process and form and to inform recommendations for establishing a state-wide MOLST program.
The evaluation will gather lessons learned from the MOLST demonstration sites' experiences, including:
- Factors that support or inhibit effective MOLST utilization in different types of health care settings
- Aspects of the MOLST process and form that work well
- Aspects of the MOLST process and form that need changes or enhancements
- Unanticipated impacts of MOLST implementation
- The potential of MOLST for improving the quality of end of life care in different types of health care settings
- Suggestions for improving MOLST training and outreach materials
- Potential for MOLST impact on clinician-patient communication about life-sustaining treatments
- Suggestions for enhancing the quality of MOLST in general
- Recommendations for MOLST expansion beyond the demonstration sites.
Evaluation findings will be incorporated into the final MOLST report and recommendations to be submitted to the EOHHS Secretary in early 2011.
